A fertilizer buyer can usually find several sources of granular urea, UAN solution or ASN product. The challenge is not product availability. The challenge is evaluating which product form, nutrient forms and supplier documents are appropriate for the crop, the soil, the equipment and the end market. Three decision points are often underestimated:
  • Nitrogen form.Urea nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen are not identical agronomically. A liquid UAN 32 product contains urea nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen. An ASN 26-0-0+13S granule contains ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen.
  • Secondary nutrient content.Some nitrogen-focused fertilizers contain no sulfur. ASN 26-0-0+13S is positioned as a nitrogen and sulfur fertilizer because it supplies both nutrients in one granular product.

The risk is comparing products by total nitrogen alone. A liquid product with 32% N is not automatically the right choice if the crop also needs sulfur or if the farm does not have liquid application equipment. This makes ASN a dual-nitrogen granular fertilizer with a nitrogen-sulfur nutrient profile.

The typical physical profile for ASN includes white to off-white granules, a granule size of about 2 to 4 mm and moisture content no greater than 1.0%. ASN is applied as base fertilization, top dressing and for field crops. It is usually evaluated when a crop program needs both nitrogen and sulfur, particularly in cereals, oilseed crops and other field crops where sulfur is part of the nutrient recommendation.

In practical terms, ASN is a granular option for situations where the crop would benefit from both nitrate and ammonium nitrogen plus sulfur.
